DCW Monthly: April 2025
This month, DCW unpacks the legal and practical shifts reshaping trade finance interpretation. Why are ICC Opinions becoming increasingly scarce?
A recent article from a Canadian perspective acknowledges that the Canadian Border Service Agency (CBSA) faces increased pressure to identify and intercept fentanyl and other illicit drug flows into the US. The challenge is formidable as the sheer size of the largely unmonitored and easily traversed US-Canadian border places considerable strains on enforcement personnel, even with staffing increases and use of more sophisticated technology designed to detect drug-related movements.
“Canada’s hidden crisis – How fentanyl fuels a deadly cross-border drug trade” is jointly authored by Sean Parker, Abdelaziz Abouelhoda, May Serageldin, and Sheeraz Ullah. The four professionals, each with extensive experience in specific aspects of banking, suggest that border staffing and technological enhancements alone will not curb fentanyl and opioid trafficking. Instead, they contend a “multipronged approach” is needed to more effectively confront the crisis.
