On 27 October 2022, Professor Charl Hugo, one of South Africa’s leading banking law experts was honored with a collection of essays dedicated to his academic achievements on the occasion of his 65th birthday and well-deserved retirement. This comes after a successful career in academia and legal practice with the last ten years as professor in banking law and head of the Centre for Banking Law at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa.
Professor Hugo’s achievements include, inter alia, successfully supervising several doctoral students with their theses on banking and trade finance law, organizing the Annual Banking Law Update (ABLU) conference in Johannesburg each year from 2013 to 2021, and establishing a regular exchange of academics and postgraduate students with Augsburg University, Germany.
The collection of essays of about 400 pages was edited by Dr. Karl Marxen, a former Director of Research at IIBLP and former doctoral student of Professor Hugo. It was published as a special edition of the Potchefstroom Electronic Law Journal and contains 14 peer-reviewed research articles relating primarily to banking, trade finance, tax, and comparative law.
