Enigio’s trade:original Solution First Verified as in Accordance with MLETR

trace:original, a digital trade solution developed by Sweden-based Enigio AB, became the first system to be recognized as meeting the reliability standard and other provisions of the UNCITRAL Model Law on Electronic Transferable Records (MLETR), based on the findings of two international organizations who reviewed and confirmed Enigio’s completion of their MLETR self-assessment tool and satisfying the policies and procedures of the DGC Digital Trust Conformity Assessment Program.

On 18 November 2024, Canada-based Digital Governance Council (DGC) and the ICC Digital Standards Initiative (DSI) jointly issued a Verification Statement in which they determined that Enigio “provided sufficient evidence” that trace:original satisfied various verification claims, including trace:original’s conformity to MLETR’s general provisions (MLETR Articles 1-7), functional equivalence in relation to MLETR Articles 8-11, and fulfillment of MLETR Article 12’s general reliability standard for purposes of specified MLETR Articles.

Additionally, DGC and ICC DSI affirmed that Enigio AB has demonstrated support of MLETR Article 12’s general reliability standard with: “Applicable operational and security controls in place to support general reliability standard” and “Technical procedures used in the creation, maintenance and transfer of electronic records suitable to ensure compliance with current technological standards”.

On 14 January 2025, Secro Inc. of Delaware, USA, was issued a Verification Statement after DGC determined that Secro successfully completed the ICC DSI/DGC MLETR Self-Assessment Tool for its tokenized trade documents SaaS solution. Based on review, DGC confirmed that Secro furnished adequate evidence regarding its solution to attain verification.

Both verification statements stipulate: “Until such time that the DGC Digital Trust Conformity Assessment Program receives accreditation this verification statement shall be relied on as an interim acknowledgement only. Once accreditation is received, this verification statement shall be reviewed and considered for formal recognition.”

Contacted by DCW and asked what needs to happen for the lifting of interim status, DGC Chief Executive Officer Keith Jansa explained that interim status will be lifted “following (DGC’s) accreditation by an International Accreditation Forum (IAF) Member to ISO/IEC 17029, Conformity assessment — General principles and requirements for validation and verification bodies.” Jansa stated: “The process for achieving accreditation involves a thorough review of the entity's policies, procedures, and systems to confirm they meet the required standards (e.g., ISO/IEC 17029). This includes completing any audits, or additional assessments as required by the accrediting body. Accreditation is typically granted by a (IAF) Member … to which the entity has engaged with to request accreditation.”

As for the projected timeframe for accreditation, Jansa said that it can vary. He added: “While (DGC) is using ISO/IEC 17029 methodology for its process of issuing statements of validation and verification for areas including Artificial Intelligence, Digital Trade Documentation, and Digital Credentials, this is new. To date, Accreditation Bodies globally have only assessed and issued ISO/IEC 17029 accreditation for greenhouse gas emission programs. We are presently engaged with two Accreditation Bodies, exploring an expansion of their accreditation programs to include digital trust. Typical accreditation processes can range from several months to over a year.”
