Effective 1 January 2023, Professor Michelle Kelly-Louw has been appointed Head of the Department of Commercial Law for a three-year term at the University of Cape Town (UCT). The UCT Law Faculty is the oldest law school in South Africa with their first lecture given in 1859. It is the top- ranked law school on the African continent and is among the top 150 law schools worldwide. The Faculty has a range of international agreements that enable students and staff to pursue exchanges and research relationships in locations such as Australia, Canada, Ethiopia, Europe, Kenya, the UK and the USA.
The department offers many specialised law courses such as shipping, commercial arbitration, international commercial transactions and international trade. During her term she will specifically grow new offerings focusing on banking and finance law, as it is a field of law that received limited attention in the past at UCT.
